High-Fructose Sweet Tooth
posted by Mighty Staff
In 2001 the average American consumed 63 pounds of high fructose corn syrup (does anyone have a more recent number?). Chances are you are consuming more HFCS than sugar, and if you look close enough, you will realize it is a staple in many processed foods. You are likely to see it in your yogurt and cereal and in your crackers and sodas. A few articles in case you are interested in reading more:
Accidental Hedonist on HFCS:
"What they don't say is that HFCS is a man-made product. HFCS is not a naturally occuring product, and I don't mean that in the same way I mean that All-Purpose Flour isn't a naturally occuring product. I mean it in the sense that HFCS must be made in a controlled environment, and enzymes not natural to corn products must be purposefully introduced to cornstarch in a very specific order for HFCS to exist." I would like to remind everyone that "obesity" is a word loosely used to oppress fat people. A site as progressive as this might want to be more selective about how it delivers information.
HFCS is the subject, I realize, but we still have a choice what we put into our bodies and why not make all bodies ok? I feel like spreading the word about healthful alternatives is wonderful. But let's please be careful about fat-bashing. Fat people and lean people can both be well or unwell depending on what they consume or refrain from.
Pescado,
If you are referring to the title of the Seattle Times piece - the name of that article was their choice (not ours). We were attempting to link to a selection of articles on the topic.

i'm not average, and i'm not eating 63 pounds of HFCS a year, no way! once i found out about it, i started putting back every product that has it in it. someone else can have my share!
i even wrote to Thomas' English Muffins when I realized that their WHOLE GRAIN english muffin has it in it....the answer I got back from them was that it's okayed by the government, and hey! they sent me some coupons for the product I had already rejected.
